Strengthens the Spleen, remove excess dampness, warms and harmonises the Stomach

Barley & Yam Digestive Wellness Drink

In the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Spleen and Stomach are regarded as the “foundation of acquired health” and the “source of energy and blood.” All nourishment from food relies on the strength of these organs to absorb and distribute. Modern lifestyles with irregular eating habits, overthinking, and constant stress can easily weaken the Spleen and Stomach, leading to Spleen Qi deficiency and dampness accumulation. Common symptoms include poor appetite, indigestion, bloating, loose stools, and fatigue.

This stomach-nourishing drink combines food-based medicinal ingredients through the convenience of a modern high-speed blender, allowing the ancient wisdom of nurturing the digestive system to be part of daily life. It is gentle, smooth, and nourishing, gradually tonifying, aiming to strengthen the core and restore healthy Spleen and Stomach for good digestion.

Formula Principles & TCM Explanation
1. Barley (preferably roasted)
  • Nature & Meridians: Cooling in nature, sweet and bland. Enters the Spleen, Stomach and Lung meridians.
  • Functions: Strengthens the Spleen, eliminates dampness, clears heat, and expels pus. It is a key herb for removing internal dampness. Since Spleen deficiency generates dampness, and dampness in turn burdens the Spleen, barley helps “lighten the load” and break this cycle.
  • Important Reminders: Raw barley is cooling in nature, it’s recommended to use roasted barley for those with weak Spleen and Stomach. Roasting them makes their nature milder and enhances the spleen-strengthening and anti-diarrheal effect.
2. Chinese Yam (fresh or dried)
  • Nature & Meridians: Neutral and sweet. Enters the Spleen, Lung, and Kidney meridians.
  • Functions: Tonifies the Spleen and Stomach, nourishes fluids and Lungs, strengthens the Kidneys, and prevents loss of vitality. Nourishes 3 Burners of the body evenly and harmoniously, especially good for restoring Spleen Qi and nourishing Yin. Its sticky, mucilaginous texture protects the Stomach lining, helping with weak digestion, fatigue, or chronic diarrhoea. It’s like a gentle protective coat for the Stomach.
3.Red Dates (Jujube)
  • Nature & Meridians: Warm and sweet. Enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Heart meridians.
  • Functions: Tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood, and calms the mind. Red dates are classic food for replenishing Qi and Blood. Their sweet and warm nature gently warms the middle part of the body (Spleen and Stomach), enhancing the tonifying effects of Barley and Chinese Yam. At the same time, they improve the flavour of beverages, imparting a natural sweetness. Its gentle warmth enhances the digestive-tonifying effects of Barley and Chinese Yam, while adding a natural, pleasant sweetness.

Herbal Compatibility:
These three ingredients work in perfect harmony —
  • Chinese Yam serves as the chief herb, strengthening the Spleen and stabilising the centre part of the body
  • Barley acts as the assistant herb, removing dampness and clearing internal obstruction
  • Red Dates function as the adjuvant and guiding herb, tonifying Qi and nourishing Blood, while improving flavour and harmony.

Together, they achieve the effects of “strengthening the Spleen, removing dampness, replenishing the digestive system and harmonizing the Stomach.” The combination tonifies without being cloying and removes pathogenic dampness without harming healthy Qi—a gentle yet remarkable formula where simplicity reveals true efficacy.

Ingredients (1–2 servings)
  • Roasted Barley: 20 gm (if using raw Barley, lightly pan-toasted until pale golden)
  • Chinese Yam: 100 gm fresh preferred (or 30 gm dried slices)
  • Red Dates: 5–6 pcs
  • Water: 400–500 ml

Preparation Steps (Slow simmering and blending for complete integration)
Step 1 – Prepare the ingredients – prepare early to activate the medicinal properties
  • Rinse the roasted Barley with clean water.
  • Wash the red dates and remove the pits (the pits have a drying property, may cause internal heat).
  • For fresh Chinese Yam: wear gloves to peel and cut into small pieces (the mucilage may irritate sensitive skin).
  • For dried Chinese Yam slices: rinse together with Barley.
Step 2 – Blend – Break the cell walls and extract essence

Place all ingredients into the i-Processor. Secure the lid and blend at Speed 8 for 10 minutes until smooth and creamy.

Step 3 – Drink it warm to nourish Stomach Qi

Consume the drink warm. In TCM, “the Stomach favours warmth and dislikes cold.”  A warm drink best awakens the Spleen and Stomach’s transformative power, enhancing absorption. It is most suitable to drink this in the morning or mid-afternoon when the Stomach feels slightly empty.

Consumption Tips & Precautions
  • Best time: As part of breakfast or between meals; drinking on an empty or semi-empty stomach promotes better absorption.
  • Frequency: For Spleen and Stomach nourishment, consistency is key. Drink 3–4 times per week; regular use yields gradual but noticeable improvement.
  • Important Reminders:
    • This is a dietary wellness formula suitable for daily health support and mild spleen-stomach weakness. Those with severe gastric conditions (e.g. ulcers, acute gastritis) should consult a physician first.
    • Suitability: The formula is mild and slightly warming, ideal for those with Spleen-Qi deficiency or damp obstruction. For those with damp-heat (yellow greasy tongue coating) or Yin deficiency with internal heat (dry mouth, warm palms/soles), reduce or omit red dates.
    • Ingredient quality: Choose Henan yam for stronger tonic effect; Xinjiang Ruoqiang red dates are preferred for their plump flesh and rich nutrition.
    • Consistency: Food therapy works best with healthy lifestyle habits—avoid overeating, excessive indulgence, and raw, cold, or greasy foods to achieve optimal results.

This Barley & Yam Digestive Wellness Drink is mild, warming and nourishing—like wrapping the Spleen and Stomach in a comforting embrace. It gradually restores Qi and Blood, eliminates dampness, and nourishes digestion—a perfect, heartfelt choice for the modern lifestyle.
